Strengthened collaboration between Bakkafrost and ELDI

ELDI and Bakkafrost enter a comprehensive agreement on MARVOX-S. A recyclable, high-strength net developed to protect salmon from seals in one of the world's most demanding farming environments.

Bakkafrost and ELDI (Formerly Vonin Aquaculture, Mørenot Aquaculture and Fiizk Protection) have worked closely together for more than 30 years. Throughout this partnership, the two companies have jointly developed solutions tailored to the Faroese aquaculture areas. The Faroe Islands are among the most weather-exposed and challenging farming environments in the world.

The collaboration has always been driven by innovation, quality, and a shared commitment to finding the most sustainable and efficient solutions for fish farmers.

A new challenge demanded a new solution

In 2023, a new and significant challenge emerged as issues with seals increased considerably across Faroese farming sites. Since then, Bakkafrost and ELDI have worked systematically and purposefully to develop effective protective measures.

The result is a comprehensive agreement for the supply of nets designed to prevent seals from causing damage to the salmon.

“We have been working closely with ELDI for a long time, focusing on the breaking strength and cutting resistance of the nets to keep the seals away. The lifespan of the nets is equally important. They need to withstand many harsh Faroese winters and they need to be recyclable.”

MARVOX-S: strength meets flexibility

For this purpose, ELDI has developed and manufactures MARVOX-S, a very strong HDPE net with high breaking strength, while maintaining an optimal thread thickness. This provides an excellent balance between strength and flexibility, built to perform in the toughest conditions.

An important aspect of the MARVOX-S solution is that the net is produced from a material that can be recycled. An area of great importance for both Bakkafrost and ELDI in their commitment to sustainability and responsibility across the value chain.
